Lake Tahoe Wildfire Preparedness: Lessons from Angora and Caldor

Two fires reshaped how Tahoe thinks about wildfire. Here's what they teach homeowners in Incline Village, South Lake Tahoe and around the basin.

For a long time, many Tahoe homeowners thought of wildfire as something that happened in other places. Two fires changed that.

Angora, 2007

The Angora Fire started near South Lake Tahoe in June 2007 and destroyed more than 250 homes in a matter of days. It moved through neighborhoods of wood homes set in dense forest, the same pattern found all around the lake.

Post-fire studies pointed to the familiar culprits: embers igniting debris on roofs and decks, wood siding close to vegetation, and homes so close together that one ignited the next.

Caldor, 2021

In 2021, the Caldor Fire burned across the Sierra and crossed into the Tahoe Basin. South Lake Tahoe ordered the entire city to evacuate, sending tens of thousands of people out on a few highways. Firefighters held the fire at the edge of town, but the message was clear: the basin is not immune.

What these fires teach

Embers are the main threat. In forested communities, burning needles and bark travel far ahead of the fire.

Needles and duff are fuel. Pine needles pile up on roofs, in gutters and against foundations every season.

Evacuation routes are limited. Incline Village, the East Shore and South Lake all depend on a handful of roads. Homes may be empty for days.

Many homes are empty anyway. Second homes may have no one on site to spot or stop a small fire.

Hardening a mountain home

Use local programs too

Tahoe's fire districts offer defensible space inspections, and the Living With Fire program from the University of Nevada, Reno Extension publishes excellent guidance. Pair a defensible space inspection with structure hardening for the strongest protection and the strongest insurance file.

Wetline now serves Incline Village, South Lake Tahoe, Stateline, Truckee and communities around the lake. Read our guide to Nevada and Tahoe insurance.
